Hidden Depths

image

I was invited to take part in the last Hidden Depths event, entitled ‘It’s Pop, It’s Art’ at the Amersham Arms in New Cross, London. The evening was a mix of design talks, music and live drawing.

I drew on two A0 sized panels a piece referencing the Edwin Starr hit ‘War’. I took the lyric ‘War-huh, what is it good for? Absolutely nothing!’ and incorporated it into my piece. War is bad but I guess the arms trade think it’s good for making profits with.

Once I’d got the works all fitted in I could relax a little more and draw more freely around the words, whilst integrating them into the piece.

This character is crying because he’s thinking of all the bad films that have been made about wars, like Star Wars, although he did like The Thin Red Line directed by Terrence Malick.

image
It took a lot longer to finish the piece than usual because a lot of people wanted to chat with me, which is ok as I’d rather have a little chat than work all night long. The drawing was started around 9pm and I think it was finished about midnight.

People got quite drunk at the event. After promising my Posca pens were not permanent some ladies insisted on getting something drawn on them. I did initially refuse but they were very persistent.

The next morning at the hotel I ate two breakfasts and washed them down with lots of tea and orange juice.

Thanks to Fred, Nat, Colm and everyone at Airside who invited me down and got me involved in the event. I had a nice time.

Gday Bro.
It was a pleasure to meet you and see your work grow before my eyes.  I also saw you drawing on your charm as you drew on that girl.  Clever man!
You were the most interesting person I met at the Pop/Art gig.
Thanx for the stickers and the badge.
The badge I’ve passed onto a friend who has leukemia.  She is using it in visualisations.  Your doodle is the good cell eating all the bad cells, pacman style.
Cheers

Dear Jon,

I couldn’t bear removing what I fondly dubbed little Rolfy-H as I’d grown quite attached to his cheeky face staring up at me from my right bazonga. I compromised with covering him with a roll-neck jumper and contentedly strutted to work with my new compadre. Then I got a little warm. I removed jumper. Boss noticed your little doodle and called me into her office. I thought Rolfy’s number was up. I would finally have to wash. Instead I was privy to a long diatribe about free love before Thatcher ruined Britain and was informed that she had often rolled up to work without having slept, smelling of Latino men’s lowlier secretions. I felt quite tame.

But thank you for a good night and facilitating upper echelon office bonding. You can draw on me anytime! x
