Competition | Bad Band

Bad Band

Closing date: 11 August 2008

image

Let’s make a band!
I’ll be the pop Svengali, writing the lyrics, doodling the artwork, making all the decisions and you’ll have all the actual musical talent. The plan is to make ten songs, each song will have the music provided by a different person.

image

This will all be done online via email and stuff, no need to meet up and have band practice. So if you’d like to join the band and work on this project please post a link to some music you’ve made and write a line or two about why you’d like to join the band.

After the deadline you will be contacted if you have been chosen to join. Make sure you leave an email address or link to how you can be contacted.

image

Overall this project should be fun - so no chin stroking musos need apply. Professionals, dabblers, individuals, existing bands and tone deaf pirate robots are all invited to contribute. Your age, location, musical ability are not all that important. Feel free to post links to this competition on forums and to your musical pals. If you have any questions please get in touch here.

image

The final outcome of the project has yet to be determined but may result in a vinyl or CD release of the music alongside a digital download. Ideas and suggestions are welcomed though the final decisions will be made by me of course.

Please note your posted links will not appear immediately.

Jon, even if you round up the most tone-deaf, uncoordinated, rag-tag band, it is bound to be more interesting than the sum of American Idol (Pop Idol in your part of the world?), Making The Band and Celebrity Circus combined. I can play tambourine and make crazy faces like the dude from Brian Jonestown Massacre… Will post this on ToyCyte.

Howdy.
This all sounds very interesting. I can use Garageband and I also can play the guitar. You can listen on my myspace page at www.myspace.com/youhearddanmusic for some poor compositions. It’s only for fun.
Good luck with it.

I play some piano + clarinet, but that doesn’t mean I can’t compose for other instruments!

I do singing sometimes, I’m also a dab hand at the triangle ^-^ xxx x

Hey, i’m a tone deaf pixel faced robot!

I’d love to contribute and so would my gameboylaptopstylophonebontempicasiokorgspeakandspell based band of rusty robo-helpers.

I have some bleepy stuff here - www.myspace.com/vastikroot

It’s also rumoured that i’m linked to the Angry Fart Bashers (www.myspace.com/angryfartbashers), a band formed by two robotic clockwork souls – Owl and Rodent.

this sounds like it could sound interesting.

i am up for getting involved in a lo-fi tape music kind of way, should you so desire.

various musical offerings here…

(mine are the all in the right hand column, and some of the middle column. the ones on the left are rare fragments of hollering gathered from the remote scottish highlands).

hi jon!
i’m a big fan of your artwork… i’d join the band in a heartbeat! as was said earlier, it’s bound to be more interesting than 90% of the music out there.

check out my website for a sample track-- the quality is crap because it’s recorded on garageband at my highschool.

thanks!

My name is Alex, I can play bass, guitar and drums but my real passion is for old synthesisers and keyboards - I have just got an 80’s Casio Dg-20 keyboard guitar and i think it would be perfect for Bad Band -

Please check out www.myspace.com/thefractals for some examples…

Anyhoo have a listen and I hope to hear from you soon!

Hello again Jon,
something I forgot to mention – the Angry Fart Basher’s raison d’etre is turning images into sound.
It is the axis upon which all their music spins and although most people hear is noise, their tiny clockwork souls are capable of processed beauty too.

Doodles + AFB = tralalalala.

Cheers

Hi Jon & future BadBanders!

Are you in the need of a wicked, slightly chaotic maracas solo? If so, I’m your man for that.
Mean, angry tambourine? Count me in.
I can also do background vocals! I sure as hell can’t sing, but I’ve got a song in my heart. And at the moment that song is “Comfy in Nautica” by Panda Bear.

I guess my main forte is in the area of MUSIC VIDEOS as I’m a freelance DIRECTOR / PRODUCER. I’ve directed couple of videos and worked on several others. I directed my first vid on film school couple of years back and it went straight to #1 here on MTV Nordic. Now I’ve been toying with the idea of doing several videoseries based on colours and the moods they create. Perhaps we could do something like that with the 10 songs of Bad Band? It would be interesting to preserve the project as creative videos and I’d be honoured to be involved in that.

I’m also the co-founder of “Avuttomat” (eng. “The Helpless”) – a small, ragtag group of people with no musical talent, but whom now thanks to us at “Avuttomat” get a chance to say that they’re “in a band”. We never perform, we never rehearse. We just… exist. We have parties and we have merchandise in the form of t-shirts. Fun times! Hopefully there will be Bad Band t-shirts too wink

Overall, I’d love to help in the making of the Bad Band.

All the best,

Mika (from Finland)

PS. Andrew D. you’re quite good! I listened ALL of your songs on your MySpace and on your Last.Fm profile… Very Damien Rice-esque at times! I liked them a lot! You should definitely be chosen!

Great project! Your figures seem to dig weird sounds. I am an experimental musician from Bergen, Norway. I really like your work, and I’d love to take part in this project!

Ola,

As a chin stroking muso, erm no wait, as a blundering buffoon I would like to join the bad band as it is the only type of band to which I could belong!

For home made, half baked tunelets see - http://www.monkeycrumbs.co.uk/category/music/homespun-tunes/

Hi Jon,
Sounds like fun, so I’ll say yes!
I’m a singer/songwriter and just made a record. You can hear some tunes at: www.myspace.com/karlwilson

I also used to be in an electro band but we stopped doing it when it stopped being fun:
www.horacemusic.com

I know loads of musicians so we could do it in any style you like really.

Good luck with the band!

Hey Jon.
Even though I have no experience in creating music, I could animate a music video for one of the tracks produced.
Since each song will have music provided by different people, you could have different animators working on each video. Each one could have a particular colour scheme, etc.
Just an idea. (:

Good luck with this.

my main concern is in your illustration at the top of the page you have set the mike to either record the character’s testes knocking together in some percussive manner or simply the passing of wind...either way this is a highly unorthodox recording technique...i have a HND in Audio Production and would very happily offer my help as Production Counsltant....

Hi Jon! This is a fantastic idea! i’ve been playing various instruments and making funky-electronic-sonic-doodles with computers for a few years now, and i’d like to join the band because i’m painty-doodly kind of artist as well, and your work is a big inspiration to my music and art! You can listen to some recent choons at…

http://myspace.com/corticyte

or my slightly sillier techno-madness at

http://myspace.com/thetransistorparadox

enjoy! i’d love to help! Cheers!
