Doodle Sound Slip Mats

Closing date: May 1 2008

image

This competition is now closed.
Big big big thanks to everyone who entered, there’s so many good links and suggestions here.
The winner has been contacted and will hopefully get their slipmats very soon.

-----------
Win fuzzy cool slip mats for your out-of-date vinyl player!

All day long I’m doodling, emailing, daydreaming.. and I like to listen to music at the same time. I like nothing more than new music, something to tickle my greasy ears with and make my brain all excited.

So, to win this competition simply recommend me some good, new, music to listen to. Feel free to post links to sites and samples I can hear. The person that recommends the music I like best (or writes the funniest post) will be sent the slip mats for free.

Thanks for playing!

Hi Jon

I’d highly reccomend Vampire Weekend

www.myspace.com/vampireweekend
www.vampireweekend.com

They’ve very quickly become my favourite new band, they have a winning way with a jaunty tune and sound heavily influenced by Paul Simon’s Graceland. Which in my opinion can’t be a bad thing!

Current top 5 albums
Panda Bear - Person Pitch
Battles - Mirrored
Mastodon - Blood Mountain
Iron And Wine - Shepard’s Dog
Manowar - Kings Of Metal

And one final one, Danny And The Champions Of The World who I caught in Brixton last month pure unashamed happiness and joy! Left me with a huge smile on my face…

Hi Jon,

My two favourite places online for ‘choons’ are the Designers’ Mixtape: http://www.mixtape.nitrocorpz.com/

which you should definitely have a playlist on!

&

Last.fm: http://www.last.fm

which has music by anyone and everyone from Acid Mothers Temple to Zepplin - a truly amazing catalogue!

Enjoy! - I will re-use the slip mats as mouse mats, thanks.

Richard.

Here’s my choice of music to help you become one with your designs:

Amon Tobin - Supermodified

Telepopmusik - Genetic World

Evil Nine - You Can Be Special Too

Thievery Corporation - The Mirror Conspiracy

Goldfrapp - Supernature

Bat for Lashes - Fur & Gold

Well I have no idea what you are into so here goes.

ALESTORM!!!!

If you like a bit of metal and like PIRATES this is the band for you. Introducing the wonderful blend of SCOTTISH PIRATE METAL!!!!!!!! Alestorm are musically talented AND funny as a plate of rabid frogs. With lines like “With the power of ale he could not fail” you know we have a winner ;)

Posted by Steve Fable  on  02/15  at  04:08 PM

In the land of noise there are great bands; some have been brought up already, but they must be stressed for how good they are.

Really anything on 5rc/Kill Rock Star Record Label is good.

Deerhoof is by far might favorite band. Their music is a little more tame then it once was, almost like th Flaming Lips. Good songs are Panda Panda Panda, Six Holes on a Stick, Sunnyside, and +81.

http://www.deerhoof.killrockstar.com
htp://www.myspace.com/deerhoof

Busdriver was on tour with Deerhoof for awhile and he was by far the most entertaining person I have ever seen live.  The man spits hot lava for lyrics.

Imaginary Places and Avantcore are two really good tracks

The Little Bluegrass Band. Its me and found this would be an easy way to pimp a joke band. Maybe you’ll like it. We are kind of like a crappier version of the Moldy Peaches.

www.myspace.com/thelittlebluegrassband

Melt-Banana. The name is great in itself. They are like a punk noise band. Lurk youtube for the greatness.

Math the Band. Math the Band is a one man band from the band Math. Its kind of confusing, but he does a cover of the Arthur song, the show on PBS, that will cheer anyone up.

www.myspace.com/maththeband

8Bit Betty. She has the whole nintendo sound quality going on which I usually listen to when I am working on art projects.

www.8bitbetty.com

I will come up with more music to add later.

Not so much new, but I’m rather partial to the sounds of 0898 Dave.

He’s from the same god awful, getto of a north eastern slum as me, where his monika was probably his solution to the closure of the pits and textile factories… everyone needs to make a living somehow.

Hey Jon!!!

My personal recommendation, for a man like yourself, would be no other than Australian singer Kate-Miller Heidke…

think oldschool folk mixed with pop and opera… yeah.. how awesome does THAT sound, a tad like a baboons dinner, but believe me, the end result is something special!

throw in a dab (or several hundred) of randomness… and VUALLA… you have.. KATE MILLER HEIDKE

here’s one of her songs.. entitled, duck’s dont need satellites (literally about ducks and their simple life).

I love BABA ZULA.
The DVD is fantastic - a trip to Turkey with eletronic, folk, hip hop music and much more… you will even get to know the turkish Bruce lee/Charles Bronson who became later, the most famous Turkish composor.
www.babazula.com
It is in German/English?Turkish language. Really cool grin

OR, como down to the latinos, visit us and learn something about shaking up and drinking caipirinhas. The real treat! you might really get some inspiration with the sounds, colors and tastes of Brazil.

OR give the prize to the ones above.

BAZBAZ - SUR LE BOUT DE LA LANGUE
PEP’S - LENTEMENT
TRYO - THERE ARE MANY NICE, I WOULD NOT DARE TO CHOOSE ONE
LAURIE MILAN - JE T’ATTENDS

I lost interest in reading through all these suggestions… So I might be repeating… ehhh… But here is some of what just popped up on my ipod over the last 20 min.

Pigmeat Markham- Here Comes the Judge (I am from the Mississippi Delta… At home this cat is still being talked about. It’s old school soul/jive music from the 50’s)
MGMT- Time to Pretend (Really great young indie/electronica rock band that sounds great live. When does that ever happen anymore?)
Randy Newman- Old Man on Farm (I dig it… Can’t help it. I own my shame… Even on Vinylsmile.)
Venus in Furs- Baby’s on Fire (Brian Eno Cover)
Miracle Fortress- Maybe Lately (Beach Boys sound with more bass… Real cool.)

Now you got the poor man from Mississippi perspective… Hopefully this poor part… will soon fade out and I can be known as the new financially lucrative artist from miss.

Avary

Pardon me, but you could use it
We’re gonna make a little music
-Lee Dorsey ("occapella")

i hate genre’s, so lets make just two categories: NEW SKOOL and OLD SKOOL.

OLD SKOOL
Arist Album (notes)
James Brown-Think

Wilson Pickett-(anything with Engine #9 get back on time)

Lee Dorsey-(this guy is perhaps the most underappreciated forefather of funk, there are many compilations out there. here a few of my favorite songs: get out of your life woman; everything i do is gonna be funky; occapella; give it up)

Various- Funkaphonix Vol. 1(the buzzard by c-smalls is a personal favorite)

The Parliaments-Testify:the early years (i’ve been trying to get this album for some time now-if you get it please let me know)

K.M.D- Mr.Hood (maybe the best hip hop album ever-MF DOOM before the metal face)

Fat Lip-the lonliest punk (former member of pharcyde-kicked out for allegedly smoking crack. best song=what’s up fat lip. also best video)

anything on STAX records

NEW SKOOL
Artist Album (notes)
Sharon Jones and the Dapkings!!!-All albums

Budos Band- All Albums

Vampire Weekend-Vampire Weekend

Ra Ra Riot-Ra Ra Riot EP

the mighty imperials-thunder chicken

Eli “paperboy” reed and the trueloves (www.elipaperboyreed.com)

Devendra Banhart- Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon; Cripple Crow; Niño Rojo

DJ Andy Smith- The document II (this is the only album i’ve heard, but i don’t think this guy can go wrong)

DJ shadow and cut chemist-brainfreeze

DJ mike realm (remixes the intro to peanuts!)

anything on the DAPTONE label

---alright, i could go on but i have to go save the world. hope this lists helps cause i would love a stylish new mat for my record player--

Hey!
So one of my new favorites is The Cinematic Orchestra. just so calm but suttley explosive with joy and delight! Also, I would check out Sigur Rós. Now those are both similar yet different. Unfortunately if you were looking for something a bit faster pace, those will not do the trick.
So my one secret song i’ll give away is by a dutch group called The Opposites. The song you want to look up is “Dom, Lomp en Famous”

Hi Jon,

I am Simone’s sister, she showed your work.
I loooooooved them!
There is a song that when a listen I am feel very well, very light; remember me when I stayed with my friends thinking only about that moment, laughed a lot… it feels good, very confortable, like a trip.
Your work, your toys give me the same sensations. Something changed inside of me.
The song is
Crosby Stiills&Nash : Wooden Ships

Congrats,

My top tip is anything by the legend Ulrich Schanuss, who’s stuff is relaxed but overwhelming all at the same time. His best album has to be A Strangely Isolated Place.

Also, if you’re after something for free, head to http://www.serein.co.uk do some awesome ambient stuff courtesy of Nest.

Just stumbled upon your crazy site (thought i’d check you out after seeing your album cover for rogue audios new album) -what can i say- WOW- its blown my mind. i’m loving your work and i’m sure i’ve come across it before.
Anyway bein a dj myself and having owned some 1210’s for 10 years them slipmats sure are unique.
the track i’d recommend is - Pitch & Hold - Maillot Jaune
very moody and full of atmosphere.

p.s. just got back from berlin you should go sometime there’s some class graffiti

I would happily trade music for slipmats… For one slipmat I would trade the works of Bertine Zetlitz.  For another slipmat I would share with you the secret of a beautiful song: “We Love You” by Chungking.  If you don’t love it, then you can keep your damn slipmats, Burgerman.  But I hope you do… x
